ATP stars play soccer for Japan quake

Just as I mentioned yesterday, 15 ATP stars joined the  ATP All-Stars against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and lost 4-2 in a light-hearted match on behalf of Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims yesterday.

The ATP players showed a relax performance and a unusual covered teamwork, and received enthusiastic cheering from the crowd. ATP player’s team, captained by Djokovic, scored by Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Scotland's Andy Murray in the 40 minutes match. Nadal and compatriots David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco were among the reserves.

After the soccer match, a gala dinner was held and raised $100,000 for the American Red Cross Japan disaster relief effort.

Davis Cup: Spain 3-0 Belgium to reach quarterfinals

Spain progressed to the quarterfinals of Davis Cup on Saturday after beating Belgium in doubles by Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lppez for an insurmountable 3-0 lead on the hard court of the Spiroudome.

In the first match of the first round tie against Belgium, Verdasco defeated Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. On Friday, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal played his first match since Australian Open and it was clear his left thigh injury was no longer bothering him when he dominated the 144-ranked Ruben Bemelmans 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.Verdasco and Lopez's victory meant the Spaniards reached the last eight without dropping a single set.

Rafa Nadal committed to Spain's Davis Cup quarter-final against United States or Chile in July at a news conference with his team-mates and Spain captain Albert Costa.

"My decision is always that I will play, but I don't know what will happen in four months, if I will be tired or as fresh as a daisy, I can't say,"

"In tennis you can plan the tournaments you play but you never know how many games you will have."

Nadal will play next week in the ATP event at Indian Wells, Calif.

Rafael Nadal practices in Belgium for Davis Cup

The ATP top-ranked Rafael Nadal will back to the court and represent Spain in the opening round of the 2011 Davis Cup against Belgium from March 4-6.  This is the first time Nadal returning to Spain’s Davis Cup team since 2009 final.

Nadal had his first training with his team hitting partner Marc Lopez at Spiroudome in Belgium on Monday morning. Other team nominations for Spain for the Davis Cup tie against Belgium include David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco, and Feliciano Lopez.

The world No.1 posted an update to his 5.6 million fans on Facebook:

"Hello everyone. It's been a long time since I don't write you. You know I don't use internet when I am at home."

"I travelled today to Belgium to play the first tie of the Davis Cup."

"I have been at home all this time after the Laureus Awards. I have been practicing and working with my sponsors but also enjoying my time with my family and friends in Mallorca."

PS: The opponent is Belgium's team including Xavier Malisse, Olivier Rochus, Steve Darcis, and Ruben Bemelmans. Spain look heavy favorites to defeat Belgium based on the respective nominations.
